The Unit Cell Kit

A set of nine crystallographic unit cells in the cubic system of which there are three arrangements: simple, face-centered, and body-centered. Each is dissected along the (100), (110), and (111) crystallographic planes. The kit includes an ‘XYZ datum’ with which the user can establish their own conventional axes to describe certain planes.

The Unit Cell Kit is part of my master’s thesis at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. This ongoing work aims to improve the overall learning experience for students and educators studying concepts in the field of Material Science and Engineering. Reinterpreting 2D illustrations and text as physical objects introduces kinesthetic interaction to this field of education. On a broader level, these objects challenge conventional MSE course structures by facilitating newer, effective modes of educating and quality engagement with the subject matter itself.
